The Active and Sustainable School Transportation Charter (ASSTC) brings together school boards and the local municipality to encourage students to take active modes of transportation to school. The goal is to increase physical activity, reduce traffic congestion, improve air quality, enhance neighbourhood safety and instill a greater sense of community.
In support of implementing the ASSTC, Civicplan was retained to conduct school site design observational audits on a cross section of urban and suburban environments. Civicplan designed an audit tool that included on-site transportation infrastructure assessment, feedback from school administrators, and in-person audits of school transportation flows. The results report offers city and school officials insights into how students arrive at school each day, along with recommendations on infrastructure and policy initiatives that can encourage more active transportation choices in the future.
